The Legend of the Happy Squonk
Share
In the shadowy forests of northern Pennsylvania, where hemlocks grow tall and mists creep silently through the underbrush, there exists a legend not of menace or grandeur, but of melancholy. A creature so wrapped in sorrow and self-loathing that it weeps constantly — the Squonk.
A Creature of Misery and Moss

First recorded in the early 20th-century field guide Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods by William T. Cox, the Squonk was said to inhabit the hemlock-dense woods of Pennsylvania. Described as being covered in warts and loose, saggy skin — a result of its own tragic self-image — the Squonk was considered harmless but deeply pitiful. According to lore, if a Squonk was ever cornered or captured, it would dissolve into a puddle of tears and bubbles. It was not a monster of teeth or claws, but one of sadness — an introvert’s cryptid; a creature more likely to apologize for bothering you than ever pose a threat.
The Squonk became a quiet fixture of Appalachian and northeastern folklore, often referenced with a mix of sympathy and curiosity. Unlike Bigfoot or the Jersey Devil, the Squonk didn’t terrorize travelers or steal livestock — it simply existed, quietly crying in the moonlight, hiding from all who might see its hideous form.
But what if that’s not the whole story?
A Hemlock-Scented Turning Point

One dusky evening, as a fog crawled through the underbrush of the Endless Mountains, a Squonk wandered far from its usual haunt. This Squonk — let’s call him Wobbles — was particularly down that day. The mushrooms weren’t blooming, the creek had run low, and he’d seen his reflection in a rain puddle. That was always the worst.
But something was different this time.
Tucked beneath two strong hemlock trees was something Wobbles had never seen before — a suspended piece of soft forest-green fabric, gently swaying in the breeze. It smelled faintly of pine and warmth and felt… welcoming. Curiosity, that fragile seed rarely sown in Squonk hearts, bloomed.
Wobbles crept closer.
No traps. No mirrors. No humans with cameras. Just this mysterious floating cradle of calm.
He touched it.
He climbed in.
And for the first time in Squonk history… he exhaled, slowly. Not a sob. Not a whimper. But a contented sigh.
Then, something extraordinary happened: Wobbles stopped crying.
Wrapped in the hammock’s embrace, gently swaying under the hemlocks, Wobbles felt the layers of sorrow loosen their grip. He dozed. He dreamed. And in the dream, there were other Squonks. Laughing. Swinging. Smiling.
When he awoke, something inside had changed. His eyes still welled up, but not from sadness — from gratitude.
Spreading the Joy

Wobbles became an unlikely ambassador of joy. Quietly, carefully, he returned to the deepest woods where the other Squonks dwelled. At first, they didn't believe him. A place of peace? Comfort? Hammocks that don’t judge your wrinkles or warts?
But one by one, they came. And one by one, they found solace.
Over time, the Squonks became harder and harder to spot. Not because they dissolved into puddles, but because they had discovered something they’d never known: happiness. And happiness, as every forest creature knows, craves privacy.
Today, we suspect the Squonks still swing under the stars, hidden away in secret hammocking circles, telling stories of Wobbles, the pioneer Squonk who found his peace in a hammock.
And that hammock? It was none other than a handcrafted Hemlock Mountain Outdoors original.

Whether you’re a shy hiker, a backwoods napper, or just someone who needs a break from the world, the Squonk Sling is your safe space in the trees.
And our Happy Squonk T-shirt line (find in our Merch Section)? That’s for all of us who’ve had a bad day, felt a little too wrinkly, or needed a reminder that joy can be found in unexpected places. Featuring our exclusive Squonk art and “100% Forest Ready” taglines, they celebrate not just the legend — but the transformation.
Each shirt is like a hug from a cryptid who finally figured it out.
Finding Your Inner Squonk

We’ve all been the Squonk. We’ve all had days when the world feels too harsh, when our reflection looks like a funhouse mirror of imperfections. But maybe, just maybe, the cure isn’t fixing ourselves. Maybe it’s finding the right hammock, the right forest, the right moment — to just be.
So swing a while. Cry if you need to. But don’t be surprised if, after a few minutes in your Hemlock Mountain Outdoors hammock, the tears start turning into laughter.
Wobbles would be proud.
